There is a huge untapped potential in fisheries and aquaculture, which can contribute considerably to improve the livelihoods as also women empowerment. The future development of aquaculture depends on adoption of new and innovative production technologies, management and utilization of less utilized water resources and proper market tie-ups. Reservoir fisheries offer a major opportunity to enhance fish production in the country. In the marine sector, while the coastal fisheries have been fully exploited, deep-sea fisheries resources are yet to be harnessed. Diversification and high value produce will add new dimensions to this sector. Proper post-harvest handling, reduction of losses and hygienic primary processing are important to realize full potentials of the sector. Simultaneously, effective marketing arrangements are to be made to ensure adequate returns to the fishers and the farmers and also make available good quality fish at affordable prices to the consumers. With these aspects in view, an end-to-end approach from ensuring proper input availability to efficient marketing is contemplated, for a  situation for both the fish producer and the consumer. Set in this background, the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) would seek to realize the full potentials of Indian fisheries through coordination of different agencies and public-private partnerships.

Blue Revolution (Neel Kranti Mission) has the vision to achieve economic prosperity of the country and the fishers and fish farmers as well as contribute towards food and nutritional security through full potential utilization of water resources for fisheries development in a sustainable manner, while keeping in view the bio-security and environmental concerns. The Neel Kranti Mission will have multi-dimensional approach to all activities concerned with development of the fisheries sector as a modern world-class industry in India. It will focus on tapping the full production potential and substantially enhance productivity from aquaculture and fisheries resources, both inland and marine. It will ensure doubling the income of the fishers and fish farmers with inclusive participation of the socio-economically weaker sections and ensure sustainability with environment and bio-security. It is targeted to achieve an annual production of 15.00 million metric tonnes by 2020. The key goal would be to substantially increase the share of Indian fisheries in the export market.
